Exploring the Educational Potential of Roblox: How to Utilize the Platform as a Learning Tool

Updated: Feb 12

This week Azie has been playing a video game called Roblox!

Roblox has been a popular game for some time now and is a staple for creators on YouTube and Twitch. Today I want to answer some questions you may have about this game and how it can help develop some key learning abilities with your kiddo. I also want to address any concerns you may have about the game as well. As always these games are meant to be enjoyable for your kiddo and a learning experience! We do suggest moderating what games your child plays and supervising the playtime.

What is Roblox?

Roblox has been called, "The most popular game you have never heard of." It has over 40+ million daily active users and nearly the same amount of games or experiences. This means that whether your child is into dragons, space, mermaids, or obstacle courses there is something for your child to play and interact with in Roblox. FUN FACT - Roblox was created in 2006 by David Baszuki.

Another feature of the game; is that you may buy currency for your child to buy in-game items and cosmetics, such as outfits. There are a number of options your child will be faced with when playing Roblox; from choosing a game, to buying cosmetics, and there is the option to talk to real-life people, we suggest that kids under 12 years of age play with adult supervision at all times.

What will my child learn playing Roblox?

With a plethora of games on the website, finding one that interests your child and gives them new experiences is easy. Below are a couple of our favorite games to play on Roblox, and what I feel they teach my child.

  1. ADOPT ME! - Pet Simulation Game

    • Adopt Me is currently Roblox's most popular game ever and has had more than 29 billion visits! This game is a great way for your child to learn the responsibility of taking care of a pet; they must pick out and adopt their pet, hatch it from an egg, take care of the animal, and they can decorate their own space within the game. This game helps teach responsibility, compassion, and friendship!

  2. Mako Mermaids - Role-Playing Game

    • This game is perfect if you have a kiddo that wants to see what life is like as a mermaid/merman! There are some interactions for your child to do on land as a human, but once they head into the ocean they magically turn into a mermaid! In the ocean, they will find various types of sea life and coral. Not only is this game so much fun to just swim around and explore, but we like to use this as an opportunity to talk about what actually lives in the ocean and it opens doors for other learning experiences later in the day.

Is Roblox safe?

Yes! Roblox is a safe online game, but there is the potential for children to come in contact with inappropriate content. This is mitigated by supervising what games your child plays and making sure that voice chat is not active. According to Roblox Investor Day presentation, 54.86% of Roblox daily active users were under 13 years old as of 2020. That's largely unchanged from previous years, with 59.3% and 57.76% for 2019 and 2018 respectively.

Do we recommend Roblox?

Absolutely! Roblox is a great learning tool for homeschoolers and kiddos in general! The number of experiences your child can have from all the different games on the platform is endless. As a suggestion, let your child click around and see what game interests them. Help them find something playable for their skill set ( My daughter loves obstacle courses, but has a very hard time playing them), and make sure you are there to help guide them on their gaming journey!

Just remember that children under the age of 12 should always be supervised by an adult when playing online games!
